ESTEVAN -The carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station had its third consecutive strong month in May.
According to information released by SaskPower, the facility captured 68,885 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The average daily capture when CCS was online was 2,430 tonnes per day with a peak one-day capture of 2,736 tonnes.
CCS and BD3 had a brief outage at the end of the month to address some small equipment issues and to perform cleans on the packing in the absorber tower.
Still, the facility was online 91.5 per cent of the time, the third straight month it has cleared 90 per cent. In the 12 months from May 2021 to April 2022, it was online an average of just 40.5 per cent.
Unit 3 at Boundary Dam generated an average of approximately 105 megawatts of power last month.
So far this year, the CCS facility has prevented 266,239 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Since it went online in October 2014, it has captured nearly 4.52 million tonnes of CO2.
