The carbon capture and sequestration unit at Boundary Dam Power Station underwent scheduled maintenance in May, which took the carbon capture unit and the station’s No. 3 power generating unit off line for 10 days.

The outage time was used to inspect and clean various parts of the carbon capture unit before it was brought back online.

During the 21 days it was in service last month, the CO2 unit captured 50,102 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This brings the 2016 total to nearly 350,000 tonnes which means the carbon capture facility is on track to meet this year’s goal of capturing 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Since its start-up in October of 2014, the facility has captured nearly 890,000 tonnes, the equivalent of removing 222,500 cars from the road.

This month work will continue on the commissioning of the sulphur dioxide capture unit within the same capture island. This structure will transform captured sulphur dioxide into marketable sulphuric acid.

The next scheduled maintenance period for No. 3 unit is scheduled for August.

While it was in operation in May, the No. 3 unit produced between 100 and 125 megawatts of electricity daily for the provincial grid.
