The Weyburn Police Service dealt with a total of 83 files during this period. Weather and road conditions played a part in what was a relatively quiet week, which included some assaults, thefts and mischief as well.
The Weyburn police responded to a report of a large fight outside a local pub on Saturday. Upon arrival police found that a 21-year-old male had been knocked unconscious. He was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital then transferred to a Regina hospital with serious but not life-threatening head injuries where he remains in hospital. The matter is still under investigation and criminal charges are pending against a 31-year-old Alberta man working in the Weyburn area.
This should underlie how important it is not to take a dispute to this level. A single punch can have potentially devastating effects with life-long consequences to live with both as a victim and as an accused.
The Weyburn Police Service responded to a report of an emergency alarm at a residence on Friday. Upon attending and as a result of subsequent investigation, a 41-year-old Weyburn man has been charged with assaulting his estranged wife.
As a result of a traffic check for a driving infraction on Saturday, a 39-year-old Weyburn woman has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample. This is a criminal offence and the accused will be making a court appearance in Weyburn. If convicted the penalty is the same as having been charged with and convicted of driving while over .08.
The police were called to a report of mischief to a vehicle on Feb. 7. A small amount of damage resulted. The matter is still under investigation and no suspects have been identified.
The city police responded to a complaint of a hit-and-run vehicle collision on the City Centre Mall parking lot on Feb. 8. A minor amount of damage was found on the victim's vehicle. The offending vehicle left the scene and remains unknown to the police.
As a result of a complaint from a local business on Feb. 10, police attended and arrested a 17-year-old male for theft under $5,000 (shoplifting). A charge has been laid and the youth will be appearing in Weyburn court.
The Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of an assault having occurred at a local pub on Feb. 10. Upon arrival police found that the victim was being treated by EMS. The victim refused to provide a statement; as a result no charges were laid.
With the warm melting temperatures and freezing nights the streets have become extremely slippery especially during the evenings and early morning hours. The city police wish to remind motorists to exercise caution when driving as both stopping and accelerating have been affected by the roads.
The police have also noted that many drivers are committing red-light violations when making right turns. Drivers are reminded that when making a right turn on a red traffic light they must first come to a complete stop then proceed when safe.
