The 5th Annual "Weyburn Culture Day Celebration" is being held on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27 at various locations in Weyburn including: The Signal Hill Arts Centre, the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre, The Weyburn Public Library and the Soo Line Historical Museum.
Culture Days is a local, provincial and national celebration of culture that aims to increase the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in Cultural activities in their communities. It includes all areas of culture: arts, heritage, multicultural, ethno-cultural, First Nations, Metis cultures and creative industries.
The Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre will be promoting a Heritage Showcase on Friday, September 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, September 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a showcase of ethnic dancing and displays on the upper level. They are still looking for performers to showcase their talent. Ethnic food will be available on Saturday only on the lower level. There will be a Heritage Map to "pin your Heritage" available to the public. This event is sponsored by the Weyburn & District Multicultural Council and the Tommy Douglas Centre. The Weyburn Public Library will be featuring Yarn Bombing on display outside the Library all weekend. A special "Heritage Hands on RCMP" will take place Saturday, September 27 at 2 p.m. For more information on this event, contact 306-842-4352.
The Soo Line Historical Museum will be offering free admission on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a draw for a $1,000 Coop Gift Certificate. Tickets are available at the Museum. On Saturday, September 27 from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. there will be an Antique Appraiser Show sponsored by Saskatchewan Lotteries. As part of the Weyburn Culture Day celebration, members of the public can take advantage of special workshops at no charge on Friday, September 26 at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. The workshops are 50 minutes in length and are available at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. There are limited spots available so participation is on a first come basis. In these workshops the public will participate in a fun Drawing People Workshop.
Workshops will be instructed by Allan Dotson, a Regina artist. Dotson teaches drama, storytelling, puppetry, comic creation and game design at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre and in Regina schools. He received a BA in Art and English from the University of Lethbridge and an Arts Education degree from the University of Regina. He is a founding member of Regina's Valuable Comics collective and has self-published five role-playing games, several board and card games and a small series of tiny comics. Allan's comics have been featured in the Regina Public Library's centennial graphic novel, and as part of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building's 100th anniversary artist in residence program.
In this workshop participants will learn useful graphic illustration techniques for drawing people from the imagination. They will learn the basics of drawing human bodies, faces, hands and clothes as well as a variety of useful body positions. You don't have to be artistic to participate. Learn realistic illustration for comic and graphic novelsstylized, but not cartoon.
