The best fiddlers of 2012

Weyburn's 12th Annual Old Tyme Fiddle Contest was held at McKenna Hall on April 28. The Master of Ceremonies was Brian Hopfe and the Guest Accompanist was Lionel Gilbertson from Saskatoon. This year's judges were Dale Amyotte and JJ Guy from Saskatoon and Troy MacGillivray from Nova Scotia. Each of the judges, who tour coast-to-cast with The Northern Lights Bluegrass & Old Time Music, entertained the crowds during breaks as well as for the evening's dance.

The first place winner in the Novice category was Joshua LaForet. Second place went to Ashley Holinsky, third to Gracie Vogel, fourth place to Allegra Haynes and fifth to Madison Zandee.

Sierra Haynes won first place in the Junior category and Patrick Tinant won second place. Third went to Aimee Poirier, fourth to Emily Klatt and fifth place to Mitch Durealt.

In the open category, taking first was Kristian Wenaus, placing second was Ben Gaudrealt, in third was Jonathan Simpson, fourth went to Cathy Sproule and fifth to Kyle Fawcett.

Saskatoon's James Steele placed first in the Championship again this year. Paul Dacier won second place and Ray Knorr came in third.

Winners of the Twin Fiddling contest were James Steele and Paul Dacier in first place, Emily Dubois and Simone Boutin in second and Elisa Fawcett and Mitch Durealt in third.

Ray and Ben Knorr won first place in the Novelty fiddle class, the Emily Dubois group tied with James Steele for second place and Michelle Amy placed third.

The oldest contestant and winner of the Senior contest was Fred Easton, 88 years old, from Kenosee Lake.

The youngest contestant this year was Rebecca Duncan, seven years old.

The next Old Tyme Fiddle Contest will take place on April 27, 2013 at McKenna Hall.
