Summertime opportunities for children

It's that time of year again, when parents of elementary school-aged children are trying to decide what to do with their kids for the summer.

It's that time of year again, when parents of elementary school-aged children are trying to decide what to do with their kids for the summer.

For parents who are home with their children, the Don Mitchell Paddling Pool and the Young Fellows Spray Park provide an economical way to spend the days splashing in the sun with the kids. The spray park features hand sensors to turn on water. It houses dump buckets, a rainbow of colors that spray, canon sprayers and numerous geysers. The park is free of charge and closes at 9:00 p.m. seven days a week.

Located next to the spray park, between 12th and 14th Streets on Coteau Avenue, the paddling pool is also fun for the whole family. A supervisor is always in attendance and washrooms are available during operation hours. Until September 2, the pool is open free of charge seven days a week between 10:00 a.m. and noon and then from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. On each day except for Sunday, the pool is also open from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The Weyburn Leisure Centre offers an even larger park and pool experience. Public swimming times are posted at weyburn.ca/pdfs/poolsched.pdf

Three companies have sponsored free swimming throughout the summer. Monday afternoon swimming is sponsored by Cenovus Energy, Wednesday afternoon swimming is sponsored by the City of Weyburn and the Rotary Club of Weyburn and Friday afternoons swimming is sponsored by Regens Disposal.

For those parents who are busy working and whose children do not attend day care, Weyburn offers a few fun and educational local options.

The City of Weyburn offers the Fun in the Sun Day Camp, which offers a blend of sport, culture and recreation activities. Registration is underway and space is limited. For ages six to 12 years, the program is available from Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants are required to bring sunscreen, a lunch and water bottle daily to the program. A six-week part-time program is available for youth ages six to 12. Kids will also interact in activities that incorporate elements of drama, music, art, history, tours, outdoor activities, special guests, leisure and sport. Fun is the goal. Themes vary from week to week and incorporate important educational sessions which explore multiculturalism, family health, diet, safety, the environment and more.
