ASSINIBOIA -The Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia has offered a series of popular workshops on drawing and sketching, acrylic and watercolour painting, painting on silk, and working with and sculpting in clay.
These programs are made available through an ‘Artists in Community’ grant program made available by the SKArts organization.
A Painting on Silk workshop, third in the series, was held at the gallery on April 2, being very well received. These popular art workshops at the Shurniak Gallery are being conducted by well-known local artists Crystal Thorburn, and Alison Lewis.
Upcoming acrylic painting classes will be conducted in April and clay workshops will be held throughout the month of May. Finally, an eight-foot Community Sculpture will be created, incorporating some of the clay techniques learned by students in class. Anyone interested in attending these informative and interesting workshops may simply call the Shurniak Gallery for more information.
“With each medium, we explore and discuss the artwork in the Shurniak Art Gallery - how it was made, what the artist’s intent was, etc., (thus) giving (individuals) a safe place to ask questions about artwork that they may not feel comfortable asking in a more formal setting. It also allows participants to see the techniques they are learning in the Gallery art pieces,” said Lewis.
Workshops are accessible to ages 16 and over for just $5 per two-hour sessions. No experience is necessary to be able to attend - just a desire to learn and have fun doing so.
“We have, and continue to host the free (series) Speaking of Art artist talks where the public can come, listen, and ask questions of art professionals”, emphasized Lewis. “We have so far, at the Shurniak Gallery, featured artists Stephanie Bellefleur of Willow Bunch, David Munro of Assiniboia, and (we) will be hosting Kim Soo Goodtrack from the Wood Mountain Lakota FN community on April 20 at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome (to attend).”
In conclusion, Lewis expressed “we are thankful to SKArts ... which has made this opportunity available to our community through the Shurniak Art Gallery.”
