Recently the Tommy Douglas Centre hosted a nearly week-long run of the play, "On Golden Pond", providing an injection of culture to the community which many people enjoyed.
This is by no means the only example of the performing arts, as anyone with children in the school system will know. One week after my wife attended the dinner theatre performance of "On Golden Pond", I took in the performance at Souris School of their performing arts club musical, "It's A Jungle Out There".
In addition, Haig School recently had a "new" version of Snow White, coming up at the Comp will be a musical of Elvis songs, "All Shook Up", featuring many actors and singers and other talented students on stage and behind the scenes.
One could safely conclude that Weyburn is a community in tune with the arts, both visual and performing, and this is good and important to the overall quality of life of the community. I would encourage people to continue supporting all of these productions and initiatives when they come up.
As an example, the "Golden Pond" had a bit of an extended run compared to recent productions, and as a result, the audience sizes were sometimes short of a sellout. For the size of the venue, and the quality of the acting, really most of those performance times should be a sellout, or close to it.
As a fan of the "Golden Pond" movie, with the late great Henry Fonda in his last film role, along with the great Katherine Hepburn opposite him, and his own daughter Jane playing their daughter Chelsea, it was good to see the story as it was originally written, which was for the stage, and while there were some glitches, the performances (I thought) were pretty good.
My point is, whether the performance is at the T.C. Douglas Centre, Souris or the Comp, they need to be given the full support of the community. After all, the richness of the culture of a community shows how well-rounded its citizens are, people who are out there using their imaginations, and enriching us all.
By the by, as an aside, I was asked recently about an opinion I shared here in regards to the election; in this space, I can express my personal feelings, but in the editorial space, this represents the stance of the paper, and there I strive to be balanced, fair and where elections are concerned at least, impartial. On some issues we're not impartial, but I think there is a distinct difference. To me, it's American-style journalism where a paper declares themselves in support of one party over another. Here, mostly, I prefer to let all views speak, and the voters can make up their own minds.
