Expert on cancer to speak at library Saturday

An expert on dealing with cancer treatments and rehabilitation will be giving a free public information session on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Weyburn Public Library, in the lower level.


An expert on dealing with cancer treatments and rehabilitation will be giving a free public information session on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Weyburn Public Library, in the lower level.

Tracy Gardikiotis, a certified cancer exercise specialist, physical therapist and certified lymphadema therapist, will be giving a free presentation, including a general overview on breast cancer rehabilitation.

She will also address a number of related topics, such as lymphadema, cording, the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, chemo fatigue and chemo fog, psychological and social issues, and exercise and training guidelines and how they pertain to strength training, yoga and so on.

The information is being presented by the Sharing the Journey Cancer Support Group. The session will include an opportunity for questions and answers.

Tracy has also offered to provide in-depth workshop for those wishing to develop programs which could assist in breast cancer rehabilitation, and help improve the quality and lives of breast cancer survivors in Weyburn and area.

Tracy graduated in 1998 from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy; in 2005 she was promoted to be the senior therapist in lymphedema service at the Pasqua Hosptal.

She has worked with the Allan Blair Cancer Centre in the Transitions to Wellnesss sessions, and regularly lectures on breast cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema to patients, health care professionals and community groups. She was recently received the 2012 Women of Distinction award in wellness, recreaion and healthy living.
