WEYBURN – The true story of Marina Nemat, imprisoned as a teenager in Iran, was dramatized on the Cugnet Centre stage in Weyburn on Wednesday evening as part of the Weyburn Concert Series.
The story was narrated by Nemat while members of the MOTUS O Dance Theatre of Toronto did an interpretive dance of her story around her.
She told of growing up in Tehran prior to the Islamic Revolution under Ayatollah Khomeini, and then the dramatic changes to her city and culture as people were arrested and killed.
She and many thousands of other young people were imprisoned for taking part in protests about the Revolution, and she was in prison for just over two years before being let go, and Nemat related the horrifying experience of being tortured and raped, and being forced to be the wife of one of her torturers at one point. She had been given a death sentence, but this was commuted when she agreed to be the wife of her guard.
The story is based on Nemat’s book of the same name, and after the dramatic presentation, she and members of the dance troupe took questions from members of the audience.
