The City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Arts Council will host their fourth annual "Weyburn Culture Day Celebration" on Friday, Sept. 27.
A number of activities will be held in the Sun Room of the Weyburn Leisure Centre from 4 to 7 p.m.
There will be local artists selling their art in the Sun Room (old Curling Museum). The Weyburn Arts Council invites all local artists to participate in the art sale. Cost is $20 per table refundable upon attendance. There are limited spots available, and artists can contact call Ron Ror for more information.
Other activities that day include live entertainment, face painting by Bob Satre of Weyburn, and food organized by the Weyburn Youth Center. There will also be free public swimming from 5 to 7 p.m.
Another event is a Culture Day Workshop, offered free of charge to the public, instructed by local artists Heather van der Breggen and Rickee-Lee Webster, or "Simple With a Twist".
"They will be enabling others to experience art," said Alice Neufeld, arts director at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. "When the two are together, energy overflows, laughter fills the room and the creative juices join forces."
There will only be two times for workshops available to the public from 5 to 5:50 p.m. and from 6 to 6:50 p.m. All supplies are included in the workshop. For further information or to register call Alice Neufeld.
Participants in the workshop will complete a 12"-by-12" acrylic abstract painting. "Separately each piece will be a unique abstract. Collectively each piece will create a cohesive image, illustrating that we are all part of a larger whole, and that without all the individual pieces the picture would not be complete," said Neufeld.
The result represents Weyburn and Canadian Culture and our Global Culture.
There are also art workshops already booked for school-aged children. The children are able to participate in the Culture Days activities on the Friday.
Culture Days is a local, provincial and national celebration of culture that aims to increase the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in Cultural activities in their communities. It includes all areas of culture: arts, heritage, multicultural, ethnocultural, First Nations, Metis cultures and creative industries.
Province-wide, Culture Days was launched in 2010. Since then, it has been a yearly event, especially for communities like Weyburn who were involved from the very first year.
