Cultural and Tourism Director for the Tommy Douglas Centre John Nolan said that a public forum held on September 27 regarding the future of the Centre went better than he expected.
"We had about 30 people show up," said Nolan.
Nolan and the Centre's board of directors held the forum to gather ideas about what kind of productions and events the public would like to see at the Centre. The issue of finances was also brought up, as donations to the Centre have been dwindling over the years, according to Nolan.
Nolan said that the sculptor of the Tommy Douglas statue, Lea Vivot, is planning an exhibition of her work in Weyburn next May, in order to raise money for the Centre.
Nolan said Vivot is committed to her tribute to "the father of Medicare."
One thing that came out of the forum, according to Nolan, was a plan to start a group committed to bringing more tourists to Weyburn.
"We have a lot to draw people here - the Museum's silver collection; home of "The Greatest Canadian," said Nolan. "We want to find out what is the nucleus that draws people here and then attract them to other tourist spots."
Nolan said the group plans to invite Weyburn Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce to their future meetings to try to develop a cohesive plan for tourism in Weyburn.
