The photography exhibit “I Will Remember You” by photographer Barry Malesh will be featured at the Kay Cristo Room at the Prince of Wales Centre for the months of January and February for the Assiniboia and District Arts Council’s Arts Up! series.
Those who missed the exhibit in January still have the month of February to view the exhibit.
Through photography and biographical narrative, Malesh captures a glimpse into the lives of some of the victims of the 9/11 attack in New York through the memorial at the former trade centre site. This was a dramatic period in North America’s modern history. The exhibit comes out of Malesh’s visit to New York in August 2013 to view the World Trade Centre memorial.
The exhibit is made up of a series of photographs. The first few set the context by summarizing the background of the events of the terrorist attack that September day in 2001, and showing the memorial waterfall that has been built. The next ten photos depict the memorial name plate along with the biography of 18 people who perished.
Malesh conducted a tremendous amount of research, not just in photo-documenting their lives but also in revealing some of their lived history. In effect, he makes a snapshots of their hobbies, interests and family life. The two-dimensional name on the memorial becomes a multifaceted person that viewers will feel that they almost know. The theme of the exhibit is the value of remembrance. Malesh states in the exhibit information, “It moves them from being a victim or statistic to being a loved one.” This exhibit is a valuable teaching tool for those who were too young to remember this event. It is also a lesson about remembering the ordinary people who are victims of mass casualty events.
