Lady Diana was famous for her love of white flowers, but would her preference still be for the colour white if she lived in a climate that is snow-filled for half the year?

Could New Zealanders, whose gardens bloom all year, possibly appreciate flowers to the degree of us snowy winter folk?

The Japanese hold the cherry blossom in highest esteem. Since the cherry blossom season is so short, it represents to Japanese the transient nature of life.

In Greek mythology, the rose is associated with Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. Likewise in ancient Egypt, roses were offered as gifts to the Goddess Isis. Roses are the most popular gift flowers in the world.

The "Winter Rose", also called the Mexican Flame Leaf, or Poinsettia, has become a symbol of the Christmas holiday season to us northerners! Considered by the ancient Aztecs to be symbols of purity, the poinsettia now represents to us cheer and success and is said to bring wishes of mirth and celebrations.

Flower symbolism has been an important part of all world cultures. From ancient times of myths, fables and legends, flowers have been infused with special meanings. Much flower symbolism has been lost over the ages, but with so many flower choices now available, there are no rules.

Today's flowers still very much convey feeling. It's the sentiment that gives the gift its meaning. How could one refrain from smiling when spotting a bouquet of bright daffodils or a pot filled with sun-drenched chrysanthemums?
