Voices in the night

I've been thinking a lot about voices this week, partially spurred by a book I purchased from our local thrift shop. I purchased the volume for two specific reasons: first, to find out more about the author and second, to see if the book was worth keeping. Here's why. This author, who shall remain anonymous, claimed to be one of the two final prophets of God and as such he had the definitive word that the earth would begin self-destructing in 2008 and would be totally kaput by 2010. Nearly three years later and I'm still here, listening to other voices. I honestly tried reading it but ended up adding it to the recycling bin.

There have been far more wonderful voices in my life this week, though. After two months away we welcomed our son and his family back home. While I was thrilled they got to spend time with our daughter-in-law's parents, I admit we sure missed face to face conversation. Nothing could have been more enjoyable than this evening's family meal together. While telephones and Skype are great they can't fully replace hearing the voices of those we love coming from across the dining room table.

Another blessing in my life is the fact that I can access the voices of favourite radio programs in the night. On those nights when I just can't sleep, it's amazing how a bit of soothing music or a newscast from halfway around the world can send me back to dreamland.

Family voices, voices from misguided individuals and even voices in the night - all there for us to mull over. Above all I love to listen daily to the words spoken to others - and to me - throughout time, promises of grace and everlasting love.

"As for Me, behold My covenant is with you." Genesis 17:4
