The Tornado Hunter Greg Johnson shared his tornado hunting experiences with Rockglen students on March 30. Johnson was invited to speak at the Rockglen School by the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) committee.
The Rockglen School SADD committee is made up of Gus and Casey Weisbeck and Jordan and Jaycee Jacobs with Marina Thomson as their supervisor. Johnson, one of North America’s top professional storm-chasers and severe weather experts, is also an accomplished photographer, speaker and workshop leader.
Johnson attended with his Tornado Hunter sidekick and videographer Chris Chittick. Also attending was Cst. Caroline Robert from the Assiniboia detachment of the RCMP. The two celebrity guests toured the school and viewed the SADD poster about making good choices. Then the SADD committee hosted their guests and school staff with a pizza lunch.
The Tornado Hunter showed the students videos and photographs of tornados, some of which were the biggest on record. Johnson explained the background to the photographs and the risk and safety measures involved. He shared some of his knowledge about tornado science, a must in his job. Johnson also told the students about some of the rewarding aspects of his work — assisting with public safety aspect and being able to warn others that a tornado is approaching. To conclude the day, Johnson distributed posters and signed autographs and let the students get a peak at the bright orange Tornado Hunter truck. The SADD committee gathered with Johnson at the truck for a photo.
