ASSINIBOIA - About 25 people gathered for International Museum Day at Assiniboia and District Historical Museum on May 17. Mayor Sharon Shauenberg brought greetings from the Town of Assiniboia and Town Council.
Lynn Stangler, on behalf of the St. Boniface and St. Lawrence Anglican Church and members provided history on the Red Hanging. A family was supported in Payne Bay, NWT from around mid 1970’s to at least 1987 by sending boxes of clothing to Eyesiak Simigah at the Anglican mission in northern Quebec. Eyesiak was a church leader. The Anglican church would hold their yearly rummage sales, a box of clothing was assembled and mailed to Payne Bay. The people from the Anglican church sent assorted sizes hoping the clothes would fit the various children.
Eyesiak would always send the Anglican Church a thank you letter written in his native language. A translator would also send a letter so we could understand what was said.
Sometimes different items were sent including hand made articles including little moccasins, needlecraft hangings, and the red wall hanging which had been used at the from of Eyesiak church behind their altar. This wall hanging depicts the way of life in the far north where they hunted different animals for food. The wall hangings are now on display at Assiniboia and District Historical Museum.
