The Assiniboia and District Public Library played host to two literacy events aimed at children and adults on July 25-26.
Calgary-based Lee and Sandy Paley held a high-energy interactive performance attended by children and their parents on July 25. The performance was so energetic that it was moved to the main hall of the Prince of Wales Centre to accommodate all of the movement. The children’s entertainment duo performed fantastically fun songs that they wrote. Each child who attended received a free CD of their music.
The Paleys have been touring across Canada at libraries, elementary and pre-schools for over 30 years. They have written and recorded over 200 songs that include songs for Christmas, birthdays and other special days, high energy action songs, music for exercise, games and dance, as well as learning songs for quiet time, imagination, counting and listening.
The Paleys created a television series called Ballooner Landing which aired for 15 years on such networks as YTV and CBC. The series won the Can-Pro Gold award for best children’s series produced in Canada. The musical duo promotes learning through music. They believe that children find it easier to learn when they are happy and playing well together. Music opens their minds and inspires creativity.
Artist and author Gabriel Chudleigh from Maple Creek presented her adult colouring book, The Joy of Colour, and her Art of Shading workbook on July 26. During the evening session, Chudleigh instructed the audience on the art of shading technique.
She has been a self-taught artist for a long time, but this is her first book. She uses the technical pen and pastel crayons and is inspired by nature.
Those who missed these events can still get in on the library’s other summer activities. The TD Summer Reading Club Summer Fun Time runs Thursdays until August 24 for children readers at 1 p.m. and pre-readers at 2 p.m. The program includes stories, crafts, games and other activities facilitated by Amanda Franks.
The Science Centre presents a children’s show on Thursday, August 10 at 2 p.m. Author Heather Hobbs comes to the library on Thursday, August 24. The teen reading club runs over the summer. Teens read books and enter their names for a chance to win prizes, including box sets of the Twilight Series and the Hunger Games.
The library accepts donations of books that are less than five years old in good condition or older books that are prize-winning, classics, or contain local content.
