ESTEVAN - The Estevan Public Youth Centre has announced that it will be offering a four-week

group for girls in June.

The group, known as Life in an Instant, is a unique opportunity for youths to share their lives through photos and discuss their day-to-day experiences in southeast Saskatchewan.

“We are very pleased to be part of this partnership,” said EPYC executive director Juli Dzuba. “It is a great chance for girls to share their voice and open up about what it’s like living in a rural community.”

All participants will be using an instant camera to document their lives which they get to keep at the end. A photo exhibit will also be held during the last meeting of the month to showcase the work of the group. It is open to youth in Grades 7-9 who identify as a girl or nonbinary person and can commit to four weekly meetings on Thursday evenings starting on June 2.

Youth will need to register for the group by May 31 to participate.

Life in an Instant aligns with a research study being conducted by PhD candidate Meighan Mantei through Carleton University, is supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation and has been cleared by the Carleton University ethics board.

The study is intended to explore girls’ relationships to the space and community they live in through their own eyes. This group will not only help with data collection for this study but also offers the possibility for youth to connect with each other through their individual experiences.

EPYC’s mission is to guide and empower young people.

“This group offers a great way for girls to have their voices heard and shared,” says Dzuba. “It also offers exposure to what university research looks like and how it can benefit rural communities.”
