Ever heard either of these expressions? "It's a deal. Let's shake on it," or "I'll be there, I give you my word." Can you remember the days when, for the majority of people, a promise made was a promise kept?
It was another question posed by a dear friend that prompted the writing of this week's piece: "Do you want a topic for your next article," she asked. Before I could answer, the details of a couple of painful experiences poured out. In both cases she'd been promised something she didn't receive. The first instance, service by a local contractor and the second, the long-overdue return of an item she'd loaned a friend. The first individual never did keep his promise, the second, only at the last minute.
My friend's anger and hurt were evident. The failure of a repairman to arrive at any of his promised appointments meant that she had to make other arrangements to accommodate overseas visitors. In the second instance, she was left scrambling to replace the missing piece of furniture. The latter finally was returned but not without a lot of unnecessary frustration. While I'm sure both individuals had good intentions, they failed to give their promises sufficient importance.
I've been thinking about the matter of integrity. I doubt that my friend will ever trust either of those individuals again (at least, that's her current sentiment). It's been more than fifty years since I first committed my life to Jesus Christ and although there are many things I haven't understood (or liked) I've proved that God always keeps His promises. Next question: do I keep my word?
