"Did you notice the lonely little boy sitting in the hall just next to your daughter's room?" No, Mrs. Norris had not noticed him.

"There," continued the head nurse, "there is a case. That little boy's mother is a young French woman brought in a week agoThey lost their family in the old country, and know nobody here. These two have only each other. Every day that lad has come and sat there in the hope that she would awaken and speak to him. "Fifteen minutes ago that little mother died. Now he has no home at all!"

"It is my duty to go out and tell that little fellow that he is all alone in the world." The head nurse paused, and then turned to Mrs. Norris and said, "I don't suppose that you would go out and tell him for me?"

What happened next is something that you remember forever. Mrs. Norris stood up, dried her tears, went out, put her arms around the lad, and led that homeless child off to her childless home, and in the darkness, they both knew they had become lights to each other! Lent is an invitation to return to Jesus. Lent is a time to sacrifice, to share what we have, however much or little. Not everyone will have the opportunity Mrs Norris had in the above story, but we all have the chance to experience the power of daily and weekly prayer.

The gospel story of Holy week gives us a template for life. The washing of the feet at the first Eucharist invites us to come back to Jesus when our feet are aching and we are worn out from the pilgrim journey we are on. Christ will wash our feet and renew us in mind and body.

How wonderful that we can return frequently to be refreshed and renewed. Lent is a time to invite family members and friends back to the Lord, back to where love happens and renews.

To whom is the Lord sending us this week?
