CARLYLE - With the festive Christmas season nearly upon us, the Observer had the opportunity to interview Theresa Luedtke, chairperson of the Carlyle and District Foodbank. This registered non-profit organization was formed in 1989 and consists entirely of volunteers.

They distribute an average of 60 food hampers per month and by the end of 2021, will have served over 1,600 clients within a 60-kilometre radius. In addition to groceries, the foodbank also distributes donated winter clothing and hygiene products.

In 2020, the foodbank purchased the two lots located at 203 Souris Avenue East, where the Anglican Church stood for many decades. The lot is now cleared and Luedtke, staff and volunteers plan on planting a community garden in the spring of 2022.

It is interesting to note that 1,672 pounds of produce were donated by local gardeners and companies in 2021.

The foodbank has drop off points located at Arcola Family Foods, in Redvers at the Advantage Co-op and the library, and in Carlyle at the 鶹ýAVern Plains Co-op, Carlyle Food World and the library. All required perishable items such as eggs, milk and bread are purchased locally.

Luedtke wishes to send out a huge thank you to all the service clubs, schools, church groups, businesses and individual donors for their support over the past year.

With the December/Christmas hampers scheduled for Dec. 20 and 21, the volunteers will be busy getting supplies ready for an estimated 100 hampers. Financial donations are accepted by cheque to Box 356, Carlyle, or e-transfer to [email protected]. Tax receipts are available.

The local foodbank operates as a smooth well-oiled machine and is an important part of our community. Please check them out on their Facebook page at Carlyle & District Foodbank or contact them by phone at 306-575-9401.
