CALGARY – The Â鶹´«Ã½AV East Aaron Well Servicing U18 AA Goldwings female hockey team brought home the gold medal in their division from the prestigious Wickfest Tournament in Calgary.
Wickfest is the Hayley Wickenheiser International Women’s Hockey Festival.
The Goldwings first faced B.C.'s Surrey Falcons Friday afternoon and took a close 2-1 loss, before playing Alberta's Lethbridge Â鶹´«Ã½AVern Express for two games on Saturday.
The lone goal for the Â鶹´«Ã½AV East entry against Surrey was by Brooke Allan, assisted by Jada Naviaux.
They won the first game 3-2 over Lethbridge, and then later that evening came away with a 4-1 win.
In the first win, goals were by Katelyn Thackeray, with assists by Victoria Mann and Naviaux, and Talyn Johnston scored twice, with assists by Bostyn Runge on both goals.
In the evening win, Thackeray scored twice and assisted on another, and Hadley Gerle and Megan Reid each scored once. The other assists came from Samantha Colpitts, Naviaux, Allan and Runge.
Their last game of the round robin was versus B.C.'s Abbotsford Ice on Sunday, and they took a 1-0 loss.
The Wings finished second in their pool, and were set to face the Falcons in the final, winning 4-1 to claim gold for their division.
Mann had two goals, and Gerle and Brooke McKinnon each scored once, with assists by Naviaux and Reid.
During the tournament, the Goldwings had a sports nutrition class, and had a surprise visit by Wickenheiser. They also took a trip out to Banff on Friday following their afternoon game.
The U18 AA Goldwings play most of their games in Midale.
