Gunshot report, drug arrests, injured dogs: Busy weekend for Estevan police

ESTEVAN — The Estevan police Service (EPS) dealt with a reports of a gunshot, break and enter and endangering animals, a semi that collided with the train bridge, made several arrests and responded to other calls from Jan. 16-19.

During the day shift on Jan. 17, a report came in about a gunshot near the 400–500 block of Fourth Street. Members of the EPS spoke to several people in the area who also heard it. Police conducted door-to-door checks along with back-alley and yard searches but could not locate any evidence of where the noise may have come from.

“If anyone has information on this incident, please call EPS,” police said in a media release.

Police are also investigating suspicious activity at a business on the east end of the city. Officers located, identified, and spoke to two men who claimed they had permission to be there. Police will follow up with the business manager to confirm if the men had permission.

Members responded to a request for a well-being check on a local Estevan man who was supposed to have travelled to Saskatoon earlier that day. He was found safe at home.

Police also responded to an alarm at a local business. On arrival, they were met by an employee who had accidentally set off the alarm.

Officers received a report of a disturbance at a residence on the south end of Estevan. A man and a woman were spoken to, and a solution was mediated. No further action was needed as no crime had been committed.

Police attended a report of a passenger vehicle in the ditch near Hitchcock and a semi unit jackknifed on the highway on Jan. 16. Officers located the taxi in the ditch and called a tow truck to assist. The semi had resolved the issue and left before police arrived.

Police received a report of mischief involving a laundry machine at a local apartment building. The matter remains under investigation.

During a traffic stop on Jan. 18, an Estevan man tested positive for drugs on a roadside oral fluid device. He was arrested and taken to the hospital, where blood samples were taken. The samples will be sent for testing, and charges are pending. The man was also found in possession of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest.

An Estevan man has been charged with impaired driving by drug after his blood test results came back positive. He has been released with a future court date.

Estevan Fire Rescue Service, EMS, and police responded to a report of a fire at a residential dwelling on the northeast side of the city. Fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire. The cause is under investigation, and any further information will be released by EFRS.

Police arrested two men outside a downtown establishment just after 2 a.m. A 20-year-old from Winkler, Man., and a 20-year-old from Moose Jaw are both facing one count of assault after being involved in separate incidents. They were lodged in cells until sober.

On Jan. 19, police received a report of a semi that collided with the train bridge on the west end of the city. Witnesses reported that the load was too high and it clipped the bridge as it travelled under. The semi was located shortly after and the U.S. driver is facing charges for driving without due care and attention as well as disobeying a stop sign. The collision information was provided to the owners of the railway.

Police are also investigating a couple of different incidents that are tied together. The first is a reported break and enter to a residence and the other is a report of someone endangering animals after two dogs were found injured at the residence. The owner of the dogs has retrieved her animals and will care for them. The matter remains under investigation.
