CARLYLE - The two men accused in a death that occurred at the White Bear First Nations last year were back in Carlyle Provincial Court on April 23.

Jeremy Whitebear is charged with second-degree murder and Dwayne Maxie is charged with manslaughter in the death of Talon Lonethunder. Both had their matters to adjourned to May 14, also in Carlyle.

Whitebear remains in custody, while Maxie has been released with conditions.

Their April 23 appearance was supposed to result in finalizing a preliminary hearing for both men. Whitebear and Maxie's respective defence attorneys agreed the men should have a joint hearing, which would determine whether there is enough evidence to proceed to trial, and it should last one day. Both men have elected to have a trial by judge and jury in Court of King's Bench.

But Crown prosecutor Travis Avery said he was waiting for more disclosure, and so he suggested adjourning the case for a few weeks before setting the hearing date.

Background: At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2024, the Carlyle RCMP received a report of an injured individual at a residence at White Bear. Officers immediately responded and located the 33-year-old Lonethunder deceased. He was originally from White Bear and was residing in Coronach.

Charges were announced Dec. 5, 2024. Both men were on the run at that time. Whitebear was arrested two days later at White Bear. Maxie was apprehended Dec. 12 in Regina. They have had multiple court appearances since then.
