It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend George Carl McGillicky. George passed away on December 26, 2016 peacefully at home at the age of 85. George was born on January 18, 1931 in Macoun, Saskatchewan to Roy and Pauline McGillicky. He was the 3rd oldest child out of seven siblings. George went to Thorson School and attended until grade 10. As George was growing up on the farm he loved to play baseball with his brothers Roy and Ralph. His position was pitcher. He played for the Macoun Athletics. His love and talent for baseball earned him an opportunity to try out for a team in Toronto, but times were tough and he could not afford to pursue this sport he loved so much. He met his true love Celia Tessier at a dance in Estevan and after a short courtship they married in 1959. George wanted to be a farmer but could not afford to purchase land, so after working various jobs, he started working for Maloney and Crawford in 1955. After working for Maloney and Crawford for a few years, he started his own business, Coulter & McGillicky Sales and Services along with Jim Coulter in the spring of 1962. The first location of their business was on 7th Street and later on they bought some land on Kensington Street and built a shop. They started out with crews and eventually changed their focus and started building tanks and pressure vessels. George retired in 1996. As the family grew and his desire to be back in the country, they built a home in 1974 on a piece of land on the outside of Estevan. This provided an opportunity to try hobby farming and raising various animals. George also loved to hunt and fish and passed this onto his children. He also liked to curl and golf and watched almost any sport on TV. He also loved to be outside. You would often find him puttering around the yard, cutting grass or in the garden. He was a family orientated man and loved to spend time with his family. He was never too busy for family. George was a very understanding, fair and never judgemental. He always had a smile and would never pass you by without a “Hello”. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
George leaves behind him his loving wife of 57 years, Celia and their seven children: Guy (Gaylene) McGillicky and their children, Christie (Luiz Sousa), Cory (Kristy) McGillicky and Jody (Carey) Beitel; Randy (Sheila) McGillicky and their children, Christopher McGillicky, Tyson (Tatum) McGillicky and Kyle (Danielle) McGillicky; Darcy (Jackie) McGillicky and their children, Kelcy (Nick) McGillicky and Nolan McGillicky; Kevin (Cindy) McGillicky and his son Karl McGillicky; Lesa (Warren) Carriere and their children, Meagan and Stephanie Carriere; Lori McGillicky (Rick), Denise (Darrin) Brooks and their children, Bailey, Riley, Sydney Brooks and many great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters, Irene Monteyne, Marie Walter and Paulette (John) Kish.
George was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Pauline McGillicky; his brothers, Roy McGillicky Jr. and Ralph McGillicky and his sister Roseanne Monteyne.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brian Meredith presiding.
Those so wishing may make memorial donations in George’s name to a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.
