Festive fun at Assiniboia RCMP's community event

Around two dozen people, including members and residents, helped in the Assiniboia RCMP community engagement activity dubbed 'Decorate the Detachment'

ASSINIBOIA -- When the Assiniboia RCMP Detachment invited residents to get ready, set, GLOW, those that gathered for the ‘Decorate the Detachment’ event held in Assiniboia on Dec. 10 says Christmas decorating really suits them. Volunteers who helped had a chemis-tree when working with others on a decorating project, and the results are evident.

The Assiniboia RCMP Detachment invited the public to join them for a second year of their holiday community engagement activity. The December event was promoted on social media and around town for people to join members and staff from Assiniboia’s Detachment to help hang lights and decorate the front of their building for the holiday season.

Detachment Services Assistant, Ashley Burnay, says, “We are always looking at ways to get involved in our community and this time of year it’s nice to spread a little Christmas cheer while getting together for a collective activity.”

Burnay said their team along with 20 community volunteers of all ages, including some furry friends, decorated the exterior of the Detachment to make it look more festive. There were lights, garlands, ornaments, relying on expert decorators to bring out the festive flair at their location. Cookies and hot chocolate were the reward for a job well done.

Burnay adds, “I had invited our local members as well as members from surrounding detachments to attend. We are really just looking to connect with the community during the holiday season and spread some holiday cheer.”

RCMP hosted community engagement events often encompass crime reduction strategies or town hall meetings to hear feedback from the community on policing initiatives. Assiniboia’s Detachment is hosting this activity as an opportunity to meet people and interact with them on a fun, festive activity as community engagement and visibility remains a priority for the detachment.

The Assiniboia Detachment have held other community engagement initiatives in town such as the past summer’s Copsicle Project, offering free popsicles to community members over the summer months and at special events. Their Detachment team also are involved in the Better Together barbecues, which coincide with National Police Week in the spring.

Assiniboia’s RCMP Detachment includes four constables, one corporal and two front office staff.
