ASSINIBOIA - It’s going to be a celebration of Canadian pride and heritage in Assiniboia on Saturday, July 1.

“This is the biggest one we’ve ever seen where we’re keeping people busy from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.” said Stephanie VanDeSype, Recreation and Community Wellness Manager with the Town of Assiniboia. “There’s going to be something every minute of the entire day.”

The day kicks off with a free pancake breakfast in the parking lot of the Â鶹´«Ã½AVland Co-op Food Store from 9 to 11 a.m., then a parade heading north on Centre Street from the old rink parking lot. There’s room for some last-minute entries as well if anyone wants to join in the fun.

After the parade, Centennial Park is the place to be - filled with bouncy castles, live music from Lisa Moen, rope making, a balloon artist, magician, slip and slide, beer gardens, and three food trucks.

VanDeSype also noted there will be free swimming as well.

There’s also the car show from noon to 5 p.m. over at the Court House parking lot, and the Ultimate Rib Cookoff with a fancy smoker for the winner.

People can take in all the high-energy action at the fairgrounds for a demolition derby that will see 40 cars competing for top spot at 3 p.m.

The Shurniak Art Gallery also has their Blacktop Hop beginning at 4 p.m. with a supper starting at 6 p.m. They will also have live music during this fundraiser with Detour performing.

Of course, what’s Canada Day without fireworks - and 18-minute light show is planned to start around 10:30 p.m. over at the fairgrounds.

“It is going to be very busy,” said VanDeSype. “I’ve heard of lots of people are coming home for the weekend, and I’m so excited to just show our community off.”
