WEYBURN – The 80th annual Weyburn Regional 4-H Fed Calf Sale was back in the show barn on Wednesday afternoon, with 116 steers on the auction block.
Auctioneer Faron Ward pointed out last year’s sale was limited as the 4-H clubs were restricted in what show they were able to hold, but this year it was back to a full regional 4-H show, and the sale was the culmination of the interclub competition.
The Grand Champion Steer was the first to be sold off, owned by Kyla Lees of the Arcola-Kisbey 4-H Beef Club. Weighing 1,356 pounds, it sold for $5 a pound.
The Reserve Grand Champion belonged to Dawson Fladeland of the Radville 4-H Beef Club, and it weighed in at 1,487 pounds, selling for $3.50 a pound.
The Best Home-grown Steer was brought in by Emma Lees of the Arcola-Kisbey 4-H Beef Club, and it weighed in at 1,417 pounds, selling for $4.25 a pound.
The Grand Champion Cloverbud steer was owned by Rhea Holdstock of Weyburn, and it weighed in at 1,467 pounds.
The weigh-in of 4-H steers was held first thing on July 4, followed by the 4-H judging competition, team showmanship, team grooming and regional judging, with the Interclub Fed Calf Show on July 5 and the Interclub Female Show on Wednesday morning, with the presentation of 4-H awards just before the fed calf sale.
