Editor's note: This is our latest 4-H member of the month profile, sponsored by Nelson Motors and Equipment. We thank Nelson Motors for their support and we salute 4-H for its continued efforts to make a difference in the lives of young people.

Name: Anavay Pick

Club: Benson 4-H Beef Club

Age: 9

Age group: Junior

Number of years in 4-H: 4

Anavay Pick loves animals and working with them, so being part of the Benson Beef 4-H Club was a natural for her.

Working with the cattle is her favourite part of being in the club. She has entered the Estevan Rotary 4-H Regional Show and Sale in the past, and looks forward to remaining part of the show in the future.

“I like showing the animals,” said Anavay.

This year her heifer Lexi was in the Benson club’s achievement day, and Lexi was named the grand champion heifer and the reserve champion female.

And she is looking forward to showing a heifer named Aurora and a steer named Aladdin next year.

She has also entered the 4-H sale in Arcola.

While she has enjoyed the cattle show, horses are her first love. When she joined 4-H, she wanted to be part of a horse club. But then she realized she could take the money she makes from the sale of her steer and direct it towards buying a pony, whom she named Sparkles.

Anavay has been entered in the 4-H speaking contest each year, and she finds she is more confident when talking to people. An interesting experience came last year when she and her fellow members watched a veterinarian cut open a cow to perform a post-mortem, and they saw the cow’s heart, stomach and more.

Her father Kory was a 4-H member and her brother Kaiden has also been in the club, and she saw how much fun it could be.

The Benson club is a good one to be a part of, and she would suggest that her friends join.
