April 1 was the start of welcome relief at the pumps with the Prime Minister Mark Carney's end to the carbon tax.

Motorists were celebrating a significant price drop in pump prices with the cessation of the carbon tax.

SASKATOON - After a sudden price hike in Saskatoon at some stations on March 30 resulting in some gas prices being listed at 159.9, April 1 was welcome relief at the pumps. Gas prices listed were anywhere from 17 – 20 cents cheaper per litre, as a result of cessation of carbon tax.

Saskatoon Co-op’s showed 136.9, while the popular online site, gasbuddy.com showed some prices across Saskatchewan as low as 125.9 (UFA in Kindersley), Costco at 131.9 and other locations anywhere ranging between 132.9 to 136.9.

With the carbon taxed being axed as of midnight March 31, drivers welcomed the change. Although one driver at a Saskatoon Co-op gas station casually said, “I may as well fill up before there’s another reason for gas to go up again.”

While it’s a welcome break in the budget for Canadians, consumers are wondering if they will soon see a reflection of this lower fuel price in their food stories and other goods as the cost of transporting these products should be lessened with this carbon tax ax.

One thing residents need to remember is the previous carbon tax’s end will also mean that they will no longer receive the quarterly cheques most Canadians received as a carbon tax refund. A final rebate cheque is expected to be paid starting April 22 for anyone who filed tax returns before March 3, and anyone who files after that date, will receive a rebate after their returns are assessed.
