Several volunteer walk leaders are returning this year, along with a number of new walk leaders, all of whom will bring their perspective on the city.

  • Gravesites of former downtown grocery stores, food deserts and hope for the future
  • Treasures along the river

The Broadway Business Improvement District (BBID) is unveiling its Door Décor alley art project as a Jane’s Walk on Sunday, May 4, starting at 1 p.m.

“I invite art lovers, Broadway regulars and those who have not yet experienced Broadway’s eclectic village experience to join us at the unveiling of ten art installations on various doors throughout the distric,” Broadway BID Director, Ann-Marie Cey says.

“You will be among the first to see this new outdoor alley gallery in Broadway.”

“The Jane’s Walk Festival honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs – who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to community planning,” Alan Wallace, a Jane’s Walk Festival director says.

“Meet your city, through our many Jane’s Walks,” invites Murray Gross, volunteer tour guide and chair of the Saskatoon Jane’s Walk Festival Inc.

“How about joining my Jane’s Walk, bicycle tour entitled Farley Mowat’s Saskatoon, starting at River Landing on Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m. We will explore important locations in Farley Mowat's life while living in Saskatoon and locations highlighted in his books. Farley Mowat, one of Canada’s most widely read authors, lived in Saskatoon during his formative years.”

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, volunteer led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. It encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.

“No one can find what will work for our cities by looking at suburban garden cities, manipulating scale models or inventing dream cites. You’ve got to get out and walk,” wrote Jane Jacobs, author The Death and Life of Great American Cities.
