REGINA — Ducks Unlimited Canada says it’s delivering thrills, not chills this Halloween.
The October eDUC newsletter offers up a “scary good conversation” on topics ranging from climate change to habitat loss, floods, invasive species, wildfires and more.
“It’s enough to give us the heebie-jeebies,” DUC states.
“Luckily, we’ve been working to address these issues through future-focused, pragmatic, science-based solutions. We’re here to help you banish those ghoulish thoughts with some comforting ones.
Creeped out by climate change?
This summer, Canadians experienced a record-shattering $7 billion in insured losses from climate-related disasters like flooding. Wetlands can help. As nature-based solutions, wetlands offer sustainable, cost-effective defences against impacts of extreme weather. Our Nature Force partnership leverages the power of nature with innovative approaches to flood mitigation.
Taking a bite out of biodiversity loss
DUC is participating in COP16 happening now in Cali, Columbia. This critical global forum on biodiversity provides an invaluable opportunity to continue building on the momentum of our work at DUC and for conservation efforts worldwide. Our onsite team is participating in productive discussions and collaborative actions to ensure a healthier, more sustainable future.
Standing up to space invaders
The discovery of hydrilla, a rapidly growing invasive plant, for the first time in Canada is a grim reminder for to be vigilant. Invasive plant species like hydrilla, Spartina, Phragmites, purple loosestrife and fish like common carp, can outcompete native species. If they gain a foothold, they can spread quickly, becoming difficult and expensive to eradicate. We’re actively working with our partners to reduce the spread of invasive species lurking in natural habitats and waterways. You can help by cleaning, drying and draining your outdoor recreation gear and reporting sightings.
Bewitched by wetlands
Swamp Thing…Creature from the Black Lagoon…Bog. Wetlands may get a bad rap in movies, but considering all they do for us, they should be cast as the all-around hero (without the cape). Don’t be afraid to venture out to explore what’s in store for you at a nearby wetland…and prepare to be spellbound.
