Regina Vics' near-perfect season ends in loss to Estevan

Estevan advances to the league/provincial final for the second time in three years.

ESTEVAN - The Regina U18 AA Vics' season came to an end in the south final. 

The Vics lost 3-2 in overtime to the Estevan Bruins on March 21 in Estevan in Game 2 of the best-of-three Â鶹´«Ã½AV Division final. Estevan swept the best-of-three Saskatchewan AA Hockey League series in two straight games. 

Estevan will play either the Saskatoon Sabercats or Martensville Marauder in the final, a best-of-three series which doubles as the league and provincial championship.  

Regina was the top-ranked team entering the playoffs with a 26-0-2-4 record and 56 points; they had just two overtime losses during the season. The Bruins entered the playoffs as the second-ranked team in the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Division, thanks to their 17-7-3-5 record and 42 points during the regular season.

Estevan had a 2-0 lead on Regina at one point in Game 2. With their season on the line, Regina came through with Kysen Rogoza and Matthew Schimmlmann scoring in the third. 

It remained a tie game until Estevan scored with 5:26 to play in the first overtime period.

Evan Hutcheon stopped 28 shots for Regina. 

Estevan also won Game 1 3-2 in overtime three nights earlier in Regina. The Vics had a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes on goals by Rogoza and Malaki Martin, but Estevan fought back to tie the game, and scored the winner in the opening minute of overtime. 

Hutcheon made 38 saves in the loss.
