REGINA — The National Association of Federal Retirees is calling on the province’s next government to ensure a secure, healthy and dignified future for seniors in Saskatchewan.
The association notes over 16 per cent of the population, or more than 200,000 Saskatchewanians, are already over age 65.
NAFR wants Saskatchewan’s next government to commit to three priorities that the organization says will have a significant positive impact on Saskatchewan’s seniors.
What follows are the NAFR’s priorities:
• The provincial government must appoint an independent and effective seniors advocate who will ensure crucial support to seniors and their families by identifying initiatives that tackle issues such as ageism, affordability and meaningful community connections.
• Nearly three in four care facilities in Saskatchewan are publicly owned and have no mandatory minimum care standards. Enforced mandatory standards should be a condition of funding for all care facilities.
• The Saskatchewan government must facilitate the provision of supports for seniors who are aging in place, in their communities, by ensuring personal care needs from consistent, trusted home care workers are available throughout Saskatchewan.
