REGINA - Money from the Rapid Housing Initiative has been announced to go towards 50 new homes for Indigenous people in southern Saskatchewan.
Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, made the announcement this week of a $12 million investment which will fund three projects.
$9,117,632 will go to build 40 units in two separate projects to build 40 new homes in Pasqua First Nation for seniors and those at risk of homelessness, $2,900,000 will go to build 10 homes in Piapot First Nation which will have either three or four bedrooms.
"No relationship is more important to our government than the one with Indigenous Peoples,” said Hussen in a statement. .”These new homes in Pasqua First Nation and Piapot First Nation will ensure families have access to safe, affordable housing in their own communities. These projects not only deliver more housing opportunities, they also support the social and economic well-being of the entire community. Through our government's National Housing Strategy, we are working with Indigenous partners to ensure Indigenous peoples have access to housing that meets their needs."
The Rapid Housing Initiative is delivered by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation under the National Housing Strategy, which is the government’s 10-year plan to invest over $82 billion in housing. The goal is to provide capital contributions to facilitate rapid construction of new housing or acquisition of existing buildings to convert to permanent housing.
