WILKIE — With the close of August and fall on the horizon, the Wilkie Community Swimming Pool has closed its door for the season. This summer has seen its fair share of problems at the pool, but they were mitigated by the efforts of Recreation Director Lori Fenrich, the lifeguard and Public Works teams, as well as the patience of the town. The Town of Wilkie appreciates all for taking the time to make the best of the situations you were all faced with.
The pool closing means that the rink is soon to open. When the winter winds begin, I urge you all to come out and support the Wilkie Minor Hockey teams and the Wilkie Outlaws.
It's great to see everyone enjoying our new downtown 2nd Avenue Park. Residents are encouraged to attend the park’s grand opening Sept. 13 to help celebrate this newest park in Wilkie.
As mentioned in a previous edition, Public Works has been set with the ambitious task of laying down 100 tons of asphalt this summer. I am happy to say that they have put down roughly 70 tons thus far and are still hard at work to achieve their goal. Well done to everyone.
As always, we would like to extend our gratitude to all of our summer students, lifeguards and Public Works, for contributing their efforts in a challenging summer. I hope to see you all again when the snow has left us next year.
With so much currently changing and an exciting future ahead of us, it is time to look behind us to where we came from. There are many interesting stories, as well as the names and faces behind them at the Wilkie and District Museum. However, not everything is meant to last forever. The Ramsey Building on 1st Street East is set to be demolished later this year. Its poor state is worrisome to the safety of our community members and the task of refurbishment is a large one.
While you may know some of the faces around the town office, things are changing. Lana Gerein has announced her retirement as town administrator. For 26 years Lana has been a shining example of our town. With her leaves the wisdom, insight and experience of an industry specialist. From myself and all of council, we wish you a retirement that may eclipse the time of your career.
There will be an office shuffle with Connor Piller stepping in as the acting administrator, Karyn Jaindl being appointed as the assistant administrator, and you will find a new face at the front desk, Jaime Seminuk.
