WILKIE ‑ The Wilkie Health Care Auxiliary is on the hunt for new members. The organization has been a part of the community since 1929, first helping to raise money for the hospital and now is involved with Poplar Courts Special Care Home and the Health Centre.
Over the years the auxiliary has purchased assorted items for Poplar Courts including oxygen concentrators, furnishings for the palliative care lounge and Easter, and Christmas cards, treats and presents for the residents. In summer the residents enjoy ice cream treats on the outdoor patio.
Each year the organization presents scholarships to graduates of McLurg High School who will be going to post-secondary schools and enrolled in the medical field.
The number of members has seen a decrease to due to several reasons. The six remaining members are anxious to hold the May Tea and Carol Festival this year, after being pre-empted by pandemic for two years, but need more volunteers. These events are large undertaking said Gayleen Mann. More help would be appreciated.
Mann notes the help of Poplar Courts Activities Co-ordinator Jessi Pernitsky and staff members has been vital to the success of the May tea. They organize the refreshments for the residents and visitors, while local and area businesses donate prizes. The bake table is always a sell out because of the delicious goodies made by the auxiliary members and friends. All money goes directly back to the residents.
The Carol Festival is a special event at the start the Christmas holidays. Mann says talent in the community truly shines at the festival along with the voices of the children’s choirs from the schools and church.
The auxiliary meets four to five times a year, during the afternoons, to plan and organize the two events.
