WILKIE — Volunteer firefighters with the Wilkie District Fire Department responded to six calls in May.
Callouts included one carbon monoxide alarm, one STARS landing assist, a single-vehicle rollover and a grass fire. The WDFD team also reported to a commercial fire alarm, stand down and a mutual aid call from Landis for a grass fire that also resulted in stand down. Stand down means WDFD end up turned around part way through the callout and members return to their hall to be prepared to be back in service.
Members took part in vehicle extrication tools training and pump/relay pump operations. WDFD members, Craig Sittler and Randy Elder, led fire extinguisher training for staff at the Scott Research Farm.
As with other community fire departments in the area, people often take for granted that there will be sufficient members to respond when the alarm bell rings. Wilkie’s division of community protective services is always looking for new members to help serve Wilkie and area.
