Welcome back to school encompass variety of activity

Welcome week activities at community schools encompass food, fun and fellowship

UNITY — To start the year, St. Peter's staff began with a service project at Parkview Place where residents brought their walkers to a rub-a-dub station and fix-it stations, for tune-ups and cleaning.

A TV remote cleaning station was also set up. St. Peter’s staff volunteers say they received some thumbs up and big smiles indicating satisfied residents at Parkview.

Sept. 6, students attended a Welcome Back Assembly with a theme inspired by the book, The Energy Bus written by Jon Gordon. Classes received a 'bus ticket' and were invited to get on the “Energy Bus.” At the assembly, five rules for the ride of their life were shared to fuel the school with positive energy.

The School Community Council has organized a welcome back barbecue for parents Sept. 7. The Knights of Columbus were barbecuing hot dogs and there were a number of games available for friends and families to play. Staff are looking forward to welcoming all St. Peter's families to the new academic year.

Luseland Credit Union prepared and served a welcome-back pancake breakfast Sept. 6 for staff and students.

Unity Public School will hold a welcome-back pancake breakfast Sept. 14 for students, family members and bus drivers. The school is also already in preparation for their participation in the annual Terry Fox Walk by holding “toonies for Terry” hat days.

Unity Composite High School was still putting finishing touches on welcome week activities, but it will include the always popular chili cookoff Sept. 14, with proceeds being earmarked for Terry Fox and Telemiracle fundraising. A full week of spirit days is also part of their welcome-back activities.

“We had a great pep rally Sept. 8 to kick things off and introduce the senior A volleyball teams and the football team,” principal Aaron Melnyk says.

The month of September also includes school events for the annual Terry Fox walk.
