UNITY — Unity Warriors hosted the Rosetown Royals Oct. 13 at the annual Friday Night Lights game.
The lights game is one of the most anticipated games of the season and the whole school comes out to support the Warriors. Students with the UCHS SLC and PSCC had a face painting tent for those who wanted to wear their Warrior pride.
Also on location was free hot chocolate provided by Unity Credit Union as well as free cookies donated by Delta Co-op. Fat Cat and Cooper also came along to provide some additional entertainment along with hugs and waves to those in attendance.
Traditionally at the lights game, the parents of the graduating players are welcomed to the field where they are honoured by the team, coaches and their players with bouquets of flowers. This year, five players will be hanging up their jerseys.
The teams were neck and neck with a 4-0 record. The Warriors knew this game was going to be tough. The Rosetown Royals started off strong by scoring two touchdowns. Unity was able to score with a 38-yard run for their first touchdown.
The Royals played hard to the point that they had multiple infractions in the first and second quarters. Unity tried to hold off the Royals as much as they could yet in the second quarter, Rosetown added three more touchdowns while Unity only added one. At halftime, Rosetown was in the lead 47-14.
During halftime, the school committees were joined by spectators on the 50-yard line for some halftime fun and games while both teams warmed up, regrouped and refocused.
Within minutes of the third quarter, Unity player De La Rey Els had to be walked off the field with an injury. Throughout the quarter, both teams were able to score an additional touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, the Warriors scored within three minutes, followed by the Royals making another running touchdown by the end. Rosetown walked away winning 63-28.
The Warriors will now host Biggar on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.
