Unity’s first Fire & Ice Festival shines in freezing temps

Family friendly fun welcomes 2025 at first annual Fire & Ice Festival in Unity.

UNITY – The first ever Fire & Ice Festival was held in Unity Jan. 3 may have gotten the cold shoulder from Mother Nature, however those who attended sure had their hearts (and hands) warmed.

The afternoon was originally scheduled to have various activities indoors and outdoors, with the hopes of having a bonfire of undressed live Christmas trees. Although the frigid temperatures kept the outdoor fun from going forward, there was still plenty of entertainment indoors at the Unity Community Centre.

“The weather didn’t cooperate, so we had to cancel all the outside activities we had planned. The inside events went off without a hitch, though,” said Lisa Feser, Director of Parks and Recreation with the Town of Unity and one of the committee members.

On the rink surface, Dan Feser and Scott Gilbert organized races, games, people bowling and tug of war with the U18AA West Central Wheat Kings, while Unity Credit Union mascot Fat Cat skated around. In the lobby, superstar wannabes had their moment in the spotlight with Spencer Powell running karaoke.

In the upper hall of the Unity Community Centre were various games, including winter-themed Minute to Win It games, face painting, dance competitions with Telemiracle Teddy and other games, all with the help of the Unity Kin Club, Michelle Brown-McLean, Twilla Delhommeau, Crystal Gilbert, Kennadi Bretzer and friends.

“We didn’t have an exact number of how many people we had out. We figure we had close to 70 kids out to play games as we gave away approximately that many prizes,” added Feser.

The afternoon was wrapped up with a doughnut-hole eating contest courtesy of Ma & Me Bakery, where Reece Gilbert was declared the winner.

“It was a fun afternoon, and we are already looking forward to a bigger, better and warmer event next year,” said Feser.
