Unity's Chapter of the Order of Easter Star celebrated a 50th anniversary

50 years ago

Dial phones for Scott and Senlac were announced by Saskatchewan Telecommunications, who was spending over $3 million throughout the province on its dial conversion program.

At Unity Composite High School’s annual awards ceremonies, proficiency awards were handed out to Teresa Del Frari, Grade 12; Verda Savostianik, Grade 11, Lloyd Fischer, Grade 10, Kathy Romanowsky, Grade 9, Kathy Schell, Grade 8 and Sheila Petty, Grade 7.

The Unity chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star held a 50th anniversary celebration. Charter members Mrs. Annie Phillips and Mrs. Gertrude Pocock were seated at the head table.

Ed Reiter, postmaster at Tramping Lake, won a color TV set valued at $1,200 in a RJC Alumni Arena Raffle. Henry Olfert of Luseland, who sold Reiter the winning ticket, was awarded $20 for being the top ticket seller.

MacLeod’s in Unity was advertising 48-inch mattress and box spring sets for $59.95, regular price $67.76.

After placing second in the province in the junior bronze category, Alix Tuffs of Unity, age 12, was chosen to be a member of the 2002/03 SaskFirst Skating Team.

Wilkie School of Dance students who won awards over the dance season included Jayden Fenrich and Breanne Laturnus, tap duet; Megan Kobelsky, ballet solo; Jordyn Fenrich, jazz solo; and Courtney Bachman, tap solo.

Luseland hockey players Andrew Bergen and Cole Fischer were recognized as they ended their WHL careers. Bergen had played on the Red Deer Rebels team throughout and Fischer ended his career with the Kootenay Ice.
