Unity Skating Carnival returns with 'Road Trip'

The 2022 Unity Skating Club Ice Carnival offered a variety of groups, duos and solo skating performances for an almost full house crowd March 6

UNITY — The Unity Skating Club presented their end-of-season carnival at the Unity Community Centre March 6.

Road Trip let all the skaters, from the youngest beginners to those graduating this year, show off all they had learned this year with 23 different numbers, all set to music. The audience – almost a full house – showed their appreciation by showering skaters with flowers and stuffed animals after each skate.

Skaters and spectators alike appreciated the return of a skating carnival after having had to take a year off from public performance in 2021.

Awards handed out at Unity skating carnival

Colleen Smith, coach at the Unity Skating Club, presented two CanSkater of the Year awards at the ice carnival.

The first award went to five-year-old Lucas Wagner. Lucas is a kindergarten student at St. Peter’s School. His goal for the year is to be faster than big brother Caden, who is seven.

The second CanSkater of the Year medal was given to Maisyn Kotzer. Maisyn is four years old. She attends preschool in Wilkie. Her favourite thing to do at CanSkate is to skate around the fast track.

Gold Skills and Gold Dance pins were awarded to graduating skater Devyn McLean. A 15-year veteran of the Unity Skating Club, Devyn was presented with the Gold Skills pin by her coach and mother Michelle Brown-McLean and with the Gold Dance pin by Coach Smith. Not many skaters achieve the gold level and Devyn’s accomplishments in this regard were attributed to her “hard work and dedication to figure skating.”

Devyn plans to study kinesiology and eventually work in the chiropractic field. She would also love to continue skating, but isn’t sure yet what opportunities to do so will present themselves as she pursues post-secondary education.
