Unity Curling Rink repairs on schedule

While the Unity Curling rink repairs are on schedule, the First Avenue construction project is not, says Mayor Del Frari

UNITY -- Some Council members were up in the curling rink attic to see the work to date. The crew from Timber has accomplished much already. There has been the odd added glitch but nothing insurmountable. The crew still plans to finish by mid-September. I hope the curling club and the general public appreciate the effort that has gone into this repair. We will look at the possibility of publishing before and after pictures to give our taxpayers an idea of the scope of work.

Meanwhile back to First Avenue. Unfortunately, the contractors working are not on schedule. Where the work has to stop for this year is in discussion. The tender allows for financial penalties for not finishing on time but the contractor cannot supply the crews needed to finish by fall. Staff will keep us updated as time passes.

Our summer students have finished for this year. The town appreciates all of you for helping our crews with much-needed support over the last few months. You help keep Unity beautiful. Also, we extend our gratitude to Lauren and the lifeguard team for keeping the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Center busy from the end of May to Sept. 4. The sound of splashing water and laughter carried for blocks. Lauren, you will be missed but you have trained a great crew to take over.

The teachers have been preparing for the next generation of students in class. Parents are gathering supplies and the school buses are getting the once over before school starts. Just a reminder to drivers to use extra caution as the children are more concerned with seeing their friends and starting a new year of school than necessarily watching where they are going. Welcome back to everyone. Make your year one full of great memories.

We have a new bylaw officer starting in September. Staff will introduce him on our website. The website has had quite a facelift. If you haven’t visited lately, please do. There is excellent, up-to-date information on everything Unity. Thanks to Stacy Godin for the time, she has dedicated to the site.

The changes to the office setup have given staff effective work areas compared to the corner of a desk being used before. Thanks to Aileen and staff for co-ordinating the changes and providing efficient workspaces. Our staff go above and beyond to provide the best service for our taxpayers. Kudos to all.
