UNITY — The last big ball event of the season will be held at the Unity Regional Park ball diamonds July 21-23, as the Unity Cardinals 18U team plays host Baseball Sask 18U AA Tier 4 championship.
Baseball Sask website remarked on the record number of teams that entered provincial championships for 2023, numbering almost 300.
Unity is no stranger to playing host for big ball events as the 35-team Girls’ Prairie Softball League held their championship weekend in Unity June 23-25 and July 14-16, the 15U Unity Cardinals hosted their provincial championship. Several tournaments were also hosted throughout the season.
Unity Minor Ball puts in season-long efforts into the upgrading and upkeep of the diamonds, which has received dozens of positive reviews from visitors.
The 18U team will include a roster of Logan Middleton, Luke Myszczyszyn, Zayden Wagner, Ethan Stifter, Brandt Gilbert, Nash Sperle, Ethan Bertoia, Gabe Weber,and Zen Halter. For provincials the team has added Nicholas Hein and Julius Vincent Cunanan, from Neilburg as well as Connor Ralston, Austin Sittler and Kaden Sperle.
Coaches for the team are Darren Stifter, Luke Middleton and Jeremy Wagner. Manager is Tyler Gilbert.
Gilbert says the team played their season in the Turtle River Baseball League which included teams from Neilburg, Lashburn, Edam and Meadow Lake.
The provincial event is a nine-team championship with the Cards playing off against the teams the Dinsmore Dynamos, Saskatoon Blue Jay Bombers, Foam Lake Falcons, Sask. Five Giants, Kindersley Royals, Wynyard Blues, Saskatoon Cardinal Chaos and Meadow Lake Sox.
Games start at noon July 21 with Unity’s opening game at 3 p.m. facing off against Saskatoon Blue Jay Bombers. Games continue all day July 22 with playoffs starting at 9 a.m.
