High school curling was happy to be back to SHSAA competition with hopes of earning a berth in upcoming championships

UNITY - Unity Composite High School and McLurg High School in Wilkie will be sending teams to SHSAA regional curling championships in Saskatoon March 4-5. A win at regionals will earn teams a spot at SHSAA provincial curling championships.

With curling being amongst a number of high school sports that have had district, regional and provincial events cancelled since the pandemic began, teams were thrilled to be playing competitive curling again. Both UCHS and McLurg have had a long history of success at Battle West District championship curling events.

Under the leadership of long time UCHS curling coach, Kyla Snell, the UCHS senior girls were golden in their district playdowns. Players Gracen Rewerts, Kennadi Bretzer, Jacelyn Delhommeau and Kaybree Spendelow captured Battle West District gold and will now prepare for these upcoming regional playoffs in strong contention to earn a spot at high school provincial curling championships. Ashley Loadman, regular lead player, will join them at regionals.

McLurg Broncs scored a triple crown, winning medals in senior boys, senior girls and senior mixed curling divisions for Battle West District Athletics.

Regional playdowns for the boys and girls divisions will take place at the Granite Curling Club in Saskatoon, while the mixed division takes place at the CN Curling Club in Saskatoon. The format is an eight-team double knockout event with an A and B qualifier earning a trip to SHSAA provincials.

Boys and mixed SHSAA curling provincials will take place in Swift Current while the girls division will be hosted in Fox Valley, with the high school provincial championship played March 11-12 weekend.
