UCHS, Macklin girl’s volleyball on to provincials; McLurg, Unity boys to regionals

Senior high school volleyball teams are in go-mode as girls now play in SHSAA provincial championships and boys advance to regional playdowns hoping to earn a provincial berth.

UNITY — Nov. 18-19 weekend will be a busy one for high school volleyball teams competing in Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association provincial playdowns.

Following Nov. 5 conference playdowns, and Nov. 12 regional playoffs, Unity Composite High School girls have earned a spot at upcoming 3A SHSAA provincial volleyball championships.

Coach Vicki Orobko says, “Girls had a very successful season. Then travelled to Outlook for the conference playoff. The roads gave us the opportunity to appreciate the great hospitality of Bob at the Irrigation Centre Motel. He was the most gracious host, and his motel rooms were clean and comfortable. The girls were champions at the conference level.”

The team travelled to Maple Creek on Nov 11 for regionals.

“We had a few glitches in our travel plans, but thankfully made it to competition. We certainly didn't play our best, but still advanced as the third team from the region,” Orobko says.

She says the team is excited to represent UCHS Warrior volleyball in Macklin at the 3A Girls’ Provincial Championship, Nov. 18-19.

Four Grade 12 players from UCHS Warrior volleyball will finish off their high school volleyball experience with a provincial competition and include players Ashlyn Greenwald, Kristina Hansen, Addison Rewerts and Gracen Rewerts

“These girls are definitely the anchors of our team. They've shown great growth over the years as volleyball players. This year their maturity and leadership has been incredibly inspirational.”

Macklin will also be part of 3A provincial volleyball as host team.

The SHSAA girls’ provincial event will include 10 teams in two pools: Lanigan, Carnduff, Briercrest Christian Academy, Maple Creek, Macklin, Kipling, Oxbow, Dalmeny, Watrous and Unity.

Senior High boys’ regional play downs upcoming

Meanwhile, regional play downs for boys’ teams take place Nov. 18-19 with teams hoping to earn a berth to their upcoming division provincial championship events.

UCHS boys had no conference playoffs as coach Ken Parker earlier stated there were not enough 3A teams to require this. The Warriors will compete in Outlook in an eight-team regional event Nov. 18-19. If they earn a provincial berth they will be competing in Assiniboia.

McLurg boys were in Waldheim for their conference playoffs and went undefeated advancing them to regional play downs taking place in Hepburn in a six-team event Nov. 18-19. McLurg boys were provincial champions in 2021. If the team earns a provincial berth they will play in Harvest City (Laval).
