Losing their first C provincial game Jan. 26 in Neilburg, 5-2 to the Maidstone Jets, the U13 Lazers were home for the second must-win game. The first period ended with no score for either team, but by the end of the third, Unity had the game in the bag, winning 4-1.
With the series then tied at one game apiece, they played the third mini-game afterwards. In a nail-biter for the fans of both teams, the Lazers pulled off a 1-0 win to move on to round two of provincials.
Round two game dates and times were not yet available as of press deadlines, but they will be playing the Rosetown Redwings.
Meanwhile, after a 10-5 win at home over the Whitefish Flyers of Big River First Nation Jan. 27, the U13 Kerrobert/Luseland Tigers headed north for their second game, Feb. 4. With an 8-3 loss in that game, the series was tied and the mini-game tiebreaker was necessary.
The U13 Tigers won the tiebreaker 2-1, with their Facebook post noting, “Both teams fought hard in the mini game making it very exciting to watch!”
In the next round, the Tigers will face off against the Edam 3 Stars, who ended the chances of the U13 Macklin Mohawks by beating them 14-0 and 7-2 in games in Edam and Macklin.
In U15 B competition the Lazers hosted the La Ronge Ice Wolves Feb. 3. The high-scoring game ended in an 8-8 tie. The Ice Wolves led several times throughout the game, but the Lazers always managed to get another shot or two into the net to tie it up again.
The Unity U15 team will be on the road this weekend, playing the second game of the series in La Ronge Feb. 10.
The U18 Macklin Mohawks start their provincials this weekend with a game in Maidstone.
The U18 and the U15 Kerrobert Tigers both advanced directly to their provincial quarter-finals, and will play their first games Feb. 25, U18 hosting Lanigan and U15 playing in Lashburn.
