UNITY — Congratulations to all of our UCHS graduates! A special mention goes to Nic Sernecky, son of Councillor Ryan and his wife Jenn, and also Quinn and Spencer Halter, daughters of Chris and his wife Vanessa. We hope you can see the pride that your parents have in you. The future is bright and exciting for all of you, regardless of if you have chosen to further your education or to join the ‘much in demand’ workforce. Enjoy your graduation, stay safe. As a community, we love the parade, it’s our chance to see you dressed in your best and to share in the fun.
The ball diamonds have taken over for the soccer field. It’s great to see so many families using the facilities. The swimming pool has also been busy, with lots of splashing and laughter. Our lifeguard staff works hard keeping the pool clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. With all the rain, the parks are gorgeous with some help from the Parks and Recreation department as they keep them in tip-top shape for our community to enjoy.
Different charities and sports teams have been holding fundraising barbecues. It’s great to see residents lining up to support these events and organizations. This would not be possible without the help of the sponsors who donate funds for the food, your contributions are appreciated.
Public Works staff have been busy patching roads and working on water breaks as they happen. It’s great to see the 200 block of Second Avenue West looking so good. ASL is putting the finishing touches on first avenue west. It takes work every day to keep systems functioning properly, from roadwork to running water and everything in between.
You may notice the next time you’re in the office how bright it is and it’s not just our wonderful staff, the ceiling lights have been replaced with LED’s. What a difference this has made. We no longer have staff working in dark caves. The office deals with hundreds of items daily, from bylaw issues and updates to logging each transaction made, keeping up with taxes and utilities, zoning regulations, pet licences, building permits, questions from residents and potential residents, payroll and all HR issues, along with social media posts and keeping the website updated. It’s truly amazing what passes through on a daily basis. With the diligence of our staff, the town is running smoothly and efficiently.
As you know, there will be a municipal election in November of this year. If you think a seat on town council may be the right choice for you, stop by the office and ask for a Council Handbook. This will give you an idea of what we cover as a council. It’s certainly not for everyone but as a community, we’ve had very good council representation. Very few meetings are missed, and focus is on the community as a whole. We have been fortunate to have UCHS representation with Lex (Alexander) Olesen, a Grade 11 student. This is something we started in the new year and hope to continue. Please remember as well, that you are always welcome to attend council meetings. Over the summer we go to one meeting per month, with July 23 as the next meeting, so mark your calendar. If you want to speak with council at a meeting, you need to complete a delegation form. These are found on our website or you can inquire at the office. You can catch up to us individually as we are all active in our respective ways within the community.
Enjoy everything summer has to offer. We hope the rains continue along with some heat, so our farmers thrive. We all benefit along with our gardens.
